Use of Remotely Sensed Data for the Evaluation of Inter-Row Cover Intensity in Vineyards

Information on vegetation cover and soil management is used in hydrological erosion modeling, but most cases, reference values are solely based land use classification without considering the actual spatial temporal variation adopted at field scale. This work focused adoption of satellite optical data from Copernicus Sentinel-2 (S2) mission to evaluate both variations vineyard ground cover. First, a wider scale, fields were mapped by photointerpretation, cluster analysis was carried out. Results suggest that vineyards can be classified according different inter-row management, with best results obtained using NDVI NDWI. A pilot area municipality Carpeneto, wine-growing Alto Monferrato, also analyzed due availability experimental plots. Those set sloping areas present managements (conventional tillage—CT, permanent grass cover—GC). Time series indices (VIs) have been obtained, S2 native bands derived VIs evaluated assess their capability describing vineyard’s coverage growth trends plot level for agrarian year 2017–2018. seasonality effect may involved choice suitable band or index better describes development given moment year. Further studies open-source remotely sensed (RS) could provide specific inputs applications risk crop modeling.
